I don’t want your tears. I have plenty of those.

I want you to check in on your Black loved ones and respect our emotional/physical boundaries.

I don’t want to diminish the adversity you’ve faced from aspects of your identity.

I want you to acknowledge that your life is easier because you’re white. I want you to admit that you would never choose to be a Black person— because you know your life would be harder. 

I don’t want you to be “a good white.”

I want your activism to be questioned and challenged and criticized by Black people. I want you to grow from your mistakes so we can grow as a nation.

I don’t want your out-of-context MLK quotes on perpetual pacifism.

I want you to see that the only difference between The Boston Tea Party “protestors” and the Stonewall, Watts, and Rodney King “riots” is the former were white and the latter were Black. I want you to be disobedient to signal the need for change and destroy the oppressive systems that make you comfortable and powerful.

I don’t want you to use public demonstrations as an opportunity to role play The Purge or fulfill your Joker fantasies.

I want you to use your white body to shield brown demonstrators from tear gas and bullets.

I.don’t.want.to.see.another.fucking.video.of.police.officers.MURDERING.black.people.

I don’t want peace. 

I want justice.

I don’t want you to prove that you’re “not racist.”

I want you to know that you are the byproduct of a successful racist regime that has capitalized off of Black oppression and suppression for centuries. I want you to realize that being racist is more American than apple pie.

I don’t want you to feel at ease.

I want you to take a look at yourself. I want you to shed light on the corners of your subconscious you’ve glossed over for years. I want you to know that you are racist because you have be trained to be so, and it’s within your power to become anti-racist.

I don’t want my strength to be praised.

I want you to respect the breadth of my emotions. I want space to break down and acknowledge my grief.

I don’t want to lose your attention.

I want you to remember Tony McDade during Pride. I want you to remember Ahmaud Abrey during Independence Day. I want you to remember George Floyd when you vote in November. I want you to remember Amy Cooper at your Christmas dinner. I want you to remember Breonna Taylor when you hear a knock on your door. I want you to remember Trayvon Martin every time you see a bag of Skittles. I want you to know that this reconditioning is a necessary lifelong endeavor.

I don’t want you to be an ally for me or some other Black person in your life.

I want you to be an active ally because it’s the right thing to do.

We can make so many choices, why not choose to be one family on this one planet? I see it as we can choose to accept each other or not. We are all made of the same biology – our ancestors chose to use our physical differences to gain and keep power. We can undo anything we want to – but we have to want to.

Im a lower class white who grew up in a poor household and my family and i have never ever been prejudice towards anyone. always welcomed anyone into our homes and hearts. worked hard for everything we had an suffered for it as well. we dont even see black people on a regular basis where we live. why the fuck is any of this my problem, any more than some issue going on in a country across the world?

    if you must care about every injustice that doesnt even involve you, why arent you posting about the rights of aboriginal australians and uyghur muslims in china? or about the serbian and albanian social conflicts? who the fuck are you to say were guilty when weve never even been in a position where any of this is relevant to us? this author needs mental help

I appreciate you taking the time to help people like me – white and actively working to be anti-racist – know how to show up. We are using race muscles we are not used to using and I appreciate the suggestions and guidance as I work to build my own anti-racism muscles.

And black victimhood preachers are screaming “told you the white man was against black people”. But what did they and their supporters expect would happen? Regardless of skin tone you can’t antagonise a peoples and not expect a retaliation eventually. Just look at 9/11. Retaliations are inevitable given enough time and pressure. You can call it however you want but some idiots have pushed and pushed against authority, citing race as their reasoning, and now those people and their supporters are pushing back; trying to prevent the destruction of public buildings etc being their reasoning.
    All of these riots and lots of pain, death and destruction coming about due to unfounded fears of innate racism being embedded within authority is pointless and sad. I can see it becoming a self fulfilling prophecy unfortunately though! The USA especially is currently a powder keg just waiting for a spark. 😐

  11. This makes me want to kill myself. My DNA is inherently evil as a white person. I cannot connect to my ancestors or culture because they were evil. I have longed for the guidance, the connection. I have felt horrible about this my whole life and have never felt at ease. It would be better off if I was dead. No matter what I do, it is never enough to erase history. One less white person to get in the way.

      No one is asking you to “erase” history, as far as I can see. You can’t erase it, and you can’t change it, but you can learn from it (the good parts and the bad parts), and you can change the present and the future.

      An awful lot of replies here have been about white privilege and how some people think it’s not a thing. Yes, it is. It’s a thing that means, among other things, that if I get pulled over by the police, I may fear for my wallet if I’ve been speeding, but I am not the least bit likely to fear for my life. I am not anxious to let go of this lack of fear, either – I just don’t want it to be a privilege. I want it to be the norm, for everyone.

      Racism is a part of our world. You may not be personally responsible for its existence, but you are responsible for how you choose to respond to it.

    3. Respect is an interesting thing. I’ve seen a lot of comments on here that leave me with very little respect for the people who wrote them as individuals, but that is only one kind of respect. It’s a close cousin of admiration, I think. The other kind of respect is the kind that is due to every human being simply for, well, being human: respect for the fundamental right to live, to be free, to be recognized and treated as a person. This kind of respect has nothing to do with accomplishments or opinions or inherent goodness. It is due to everyone, regardless of any of those things.

      As for white people telling black people to do things, do you really not understand we’ve been doing that for centuries? Before you get your knickers in a twist, I am using “we” in the same way I would when talking about any group of which I am a member, so please don’t come at me with any “I never did XYZ.” We, as a group, have told black people, as a group, what to do for a very, very long time, with the full support of the law for most of that time, as well as with full societal approval. Now, a woman has the audacity to suggest perhaps we examine and reconsider our behavior concerning race and racism, and suddenly the sky is falling.

      I’ve said it before, and I will say it again: if this discussion makes you feel angry and defensive, maybe you should think about why that should be so. I’ve had to do it, and it was kind of eye-opening. I learned some good things about myself, and some things that frankly, made me feel a little embarrassed, mainly because they surprised me so much (like the fact that I was feeling a little angry and defensive, for one thing.)

    Got to say I can agree with some of what you said here. I went to college with the type of white people that would participate in BLM/MLK parades/protests (you get my drift?). These types of white people mostly concerned about not being racist. They try SO HARD to not be racist! They come off to me as incredibly disingenuous. Through all their efforts to not be racist, they end up being accidentally racist in the process!
    I can admit I wouldn’t want to be born black if I had the choice. You know why? I can see through all this fake revolution bullshit. What everyone is actually saying is Blacks are incapable of living in society and are unable to help themselves. It’s all spelled out plain as day. Surely you can see this! If I were black, the last thing I’d want are a bunch of white people pretending to be so “progressive”, spouting off BLM chants and running around a bunch of protests. Most of all, it would be a burden to me, as a black man, to know that all these attempts made (laws passed to force racial diversity, affirmative action to “lower the bar” etc.) were patronizing attempts to make it easier for me to survive. That, to me, is the definition of racism and further proves my point above.

However, is it really impossible for you to believe that most are there because they really don’t want to hear about another George Floyd or Breonna Taylor, ever again, that they are there because the injustice of those deaths and others like them infuriates them?

      Also, I am calling BS on your argument that it’s racist to support BLM because it’s really the same thing as saying that black people are less capable than white people. It doesn’t mean any such thing, and I think you know that. The fact is, there is an imbalance of power in play here, and it doesn’t have anything to do with ability.   29. I read this blog in hopes to learn something and I must say I have learned the most from the comments. The ignorance and hatred that comes through on some of these comments are discussing. Fist off, you are generalizing the entire black race without any facts or understanding WHY people of color are filling our prisons. My guess is you have some raciest grandparents who thought you “the way it is” and they couldn’t possibly be wrong, right? You need to travel and educate yourself so you can see that we are all 1 race, the human race. The only reason our skin pigment varies has to do with where our ancestors lived in proximity to the equator. That is it, otherwise we are all exactly the same. So no one is better than anyone else because of their skin tone. Really think about why you hate black people, because they look different from you? Is that not the most insane thing ever? that’s like me hating bald men because I’m not bald… it’s idiotic. I’m guessing that the majority of you racist’s commenting on this page are from a small town, don’t know many people of color, are uneducated, and have never traveled outside your little po-dunk town so you can experience something besides drinking Busch light on the bed of your pickup truck. It takes a lot of energy to hate someone for now reason. Don’t you want to let go of the stress? it is so much healthier to love and accept your fellow man especially because they didn’t do anything to you. If we start to treat everyone equal.. I mean TRULY equal, then all of this hatred will eventually go away and we will wonder why we were ever fighting in the first place. Before you get mad just put yourself in someone else’s shoes and ask yourself this question, “would I trade my white life to be black?” You know the answer is “no” and you know why. that right there is your white privilege. You now you would be stereotyped, have a better chance of being killed by law enforcement, have less wealth, have worse schooling and healthcare, have a harder time finding work, etc. You fucking KNOW IT!! Sure we all struggle in some way or another but just because you struggle doesn’t make the struggles equal and it doesn’t mean you can’t support your fellow man that needs help. It literally does nothing to your way of life to have total equality amongst all mankind so get your head out of your ass and tell your grandparents to read a book or talk to someone who doesn’t look like them. I suggest you do the same and stop listening to the current president as well. He doesn’t know his asshole from a hole in the ground.

The article is supposed to make you feel a bit uncomfortable, and I hope to god it makes you think critically. That’s what we need! White people (like myself) confronting their inherent biases and racism and working every day to reeducate themselves to do better. Throwing around tired curse words and yelling slurs just makes you look like a fool.
    I like the rhythm of this article, the simple and straightforward way it’s written. It’s impactful. We need to do more, we need to do better. The fight is not over.

  38. White conservatives tend to be super triggered by this so first let me recommend that the snowflakes relocate to the nearest safe space. We’re donating old “MAGA 2020” shirts for pajamas bc, yano, they weren’t used for the celebrations. Second, even if we ignore the history of the GOP admitting they disadvantaged black Americans for the sake of recruited white America’s (read: your) vote, the fact that you haven’t identified the many blatant forms of racism (I live in a city where there is a major torture scandal via police against black America — see Jon Burge and Homan Square) means you should prob expand your parameters beyond Tucker Carlson and Charlie Kirk, the latter who leads an org that has a history of “accidentally” hiring people so racist that they had to fire a bunch of employees once racist tweets resurfaced. So the fact that Kandi is triggering you means her message is on point, kind of like how MLK and every other person is America history (including white pastor James Reeb) during Selma, triggered conservatives in America. Have a nice day, snowflakes.

  40. I have a dark complection/red skin, but had to identify as white because my A-hole father hated everything non-white. My green eyes gave me away. My mother and I got beat. No one likes a melato White-Native American kid. Not even the Cherokee would want to acknowledge me, so I found solace in whiteness. Painful road living with racism and losing your friends to a racist A-hole father and mother; however, I have changed myself, and no longer denigrate non-white folks due to my ignorance and racist background. In fact, I chose to interact with Black Folks and purposely move to racially diverse neighborhoods. I get in altercations, yes, but my experiences with true friends and folks I can trust brings me back to center. Thanks Black Folks! My life is better now, maybe I am not a rich white boy, but I am better in spirit, and always not afraid to argue and fight to the death if need be for what is right.

    I’m going to be honest and not insult your intellect your 100% correct i would not want to be black. I don’t know if I could get up every morning to start my day with the fact that my ancestors endured such Painful hateful mean treatment from the ancestors of people who hire me, school me. Pay me , friend me and government me. I don’t think I could go through pretending I’m not feeling threaten or just as enslaved as my ancestors .
    My life is easier because I’m white and only privileged because it wasn’t my ancestors who had to endure painful hateful mean treatment .
    With that said rooted Americans must remember 300 years later we are all we have and belong to . I can’t remove our history but I will do everything I can that part of history never repeated itself .
